Founded by French-Chinese creator J Lou, Ricefam grew from an online community united by a shared love of rice; but its meaning goes much deeper.

For J Lou, rice represents comfort, family and togetherness, while #Ricefam became a space for people who, like her, don't always feel they fit neatly into one cultural identity.

At the centre of this community was the Rice Monster: a playful character holding a bowl of rice that became a visual symbol of belonging.

From Character to Collection

I was brought in to build on J Lou’s existing Ricefam brand and expand the world around the original Rice Monster. My role was to develop a new family of characters that reflected the playful, inclusive spirit of the community, and translate them across a growing range of merchandise and physical products.

The Challenge

The challenge was to expand the Ricefam universe beyond the original Rice Monster without losing the warmth, simplicity and sense of belonging at the heart of the existing brand.

Each new character needed its own personality and cultural reference, while still feeling unmistakably part of the same family. The designs also had to be versatile enough to translate across different formats, from stationery and apparel to plush toys and accessories.

Rice Monster = the original symbol

Ricefam = the family they all belong to

From Character World to Retail

The Ricefam characters were brought to life through a pop-up at Crostini in Times Square, Hong Kong, where the collection was sold across stickers, memo pads, apparel and other merchandise.

Seeing the characters exist together across a physical retail environment demonstrated how the visual world could extend beyond individual products into a cohesive brand experience.
